Dedicating a child

A baby dedication is a short, joyful part of a Sabbath morning service. Parents bring their child before the church, the pastor prays for the family, and the congregation commits to supporting them as the child grows.

It is not a baptism. In the Adventist tradition baptism is a decision a person makes for themselves later in life. A dedication is the family and the church making promises about how a child will be raised.

Common questions

Is a dedication the same as a christening?

It is similar in feel but different in meaning. Adventists do not baptise infants, so a dedication makes no claim on the child’s own faith. It is the parents and the church making commitments about how the child will be raised.

Do we have to be members?

No. Families who attend Edmonton Central are welcome to ask, whether or not they are members.

How long does it take in the service?

A few minutes. It happens within the normal Sabbath morning service rather than as a separate event.
