Sabbath School

A school of Christian living, not a warm-up act for the sermon. The hour before worship is where most of the actual study, and most of the friendships, happen.

What Sabbath School is

Adventists have organised Sabbath School since 1853, and it remains the part of the week where the Bible is actually opened and discussed rather than listened to. Research across the division consistently finds that most people come to Sabbath School for one reason: personal spiritual growth. That shapes how we run it.

The worldwide church sets four objectives for Sabbath School — study the Word, provide fellowship and nurture, develop community outreach, and support world missions. A Sabbath School that only does the first is only a quarter of the way there, which is why our classes are also where a good deal of our outreach and mission giving begins.

Every Adventist congregation on earth studies the same quarterly guide, so a visitor from Nairobi or Manila can sit down in our sanctuary and be on the same page, in the same week, as the church they left behind.

Adult classesSeveral classes working through the global quarterly study guide, in the sanctuary and rooms around the church.

Classes for every ageCradle Roll through Juniors, taught by screened volunteers using age-appropriate material.

Small enough to talkClasses are kept to a size where discussion is possible and a quiet person can still be heard.

Mission offeringsThe weekly mission offering and Thirteenth Sabbath offering connect this church to Adventist work worldwide.

Outreach begins hereSabbath School classes are where a good deal of our community work is planned and staffed.

Teachers who prepareWe invest in teacher development, because a class is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Common questions

What time does Sabbath School start?

9:30 AM every Saturday, running to about 11:15 AM, followed by the Divine Service at 11:30 AM.

Do I need to bring anything?

No. Bring a Bible if you have one; there are spares. The quarterly study guide is provided.

Which class should I join?

Ask a greeter and they will point you to a class that fits. You are welcome to try more than one before settling.

Is there something for my children at the same time?

Yes. Children’s Sabbath School runs at the same hour, organised by age group.
